The Story of Labour

· My Story

"Labour" is the song most people know me by. Here is where it came from, what happened next, and why it has a place in this shop.

When did "Labour" come out?

24 March 2023: I released "Labour" as a single on Nettwerk, a few months after "Forsaken" and "Notre Dame".

What is it about?

Gender inequality: "Labour" is an anthem about the work women are expected to do, all day, every day, and what that costs.

Circe: it draws on Madeline Miller's novel Circe, the retelling of the Greek myth of the witch on her island.

How far did it go?

The charts: it reached No. 22 in the UK and No. 4 on the US Bubbling Under chart.

Platinum: it has been certified Platinum by the BPI in the UK, by Music Canada and by the RIAA in the US.

What is "Labour (the Cacophony)"?

A choir of voices: on 29 March 2024 I released "Labour (the Cacophony)", a version made from clips of women singing the song along with me.

The album that followed: a few months later, on 30 August 2024, came Cacophony, my first album, with "Labour" on it.

Where is "Labour" in the shop?

The Labour collage: one of the designs here is a collage of the song's words and images: a calendar marked "...all day, every day", "therapist, mother, maid" in hand lettering, and a red banner reading "you make me do too much labour".

Built for a big room: it is a busy, colourful design that reads from across a room, on tees, long sleeves, crewnecks and hoodies.
